Peak in website traffic in September

Cancon webpages

There was a peak in the traffic on Cancon webpages due to a popular news item on breast cancer and because Cancon was featured in the Health EU newsletter. This shows from the website analysis carried out by the Dissemination team.

October aligned with July and August

The average amount of visitors on the Cancon webpages in September and October was 629 per month. There were 770 visitors in September and 489 in September. The amount of visitors declined by 36 % from September to October.

However, during the two previous months, July and August, the average amount of visitors was 393 per month. There were 362 visitors in July and 424 in August. October is aligned with July and August.

There is a rise in the amount of visitors in September. There are at least couple of reasons for this: in September there was a news item on breast cancer published on the website which drove a lot of traffic to the website.

Also in September Cancon was featured in the Health EU newsletter of the Commission which acquired visitors to the website. This is supported by the fact that most of the visitors on the website in September were new ones.

Growth in the amount of pages viewed and session duration

However, the amount of pages viewed per visitors grew from September to October by 10 %. In addition the average duration of session grew from 3:03 in September to 3:51 in October. This means that the visitors stayed on the pages approx. 25 % longer in October.

The Cancon newsletter drives a lot of traffic to the webpages. When the amount of visitors and from which channels they come to the Cancon webpages are examined, in both months there is a clear peak in the statistics when the newsletter is published with the most visitors on the webpages during that day.

A lot of traffic via Facebook and Twitter

Most of the visitors come to the Cancon webpages via organic search, i.e. using search engines such as Google. When the different channels are compared, the social media channels have grown most in the acquisition of traffic to the webpages.

Of these, Facebook is the biggest channel and Twitter is the second biggest. Also most of the growth in the social media channels has been in Twitter: the amount of visitors via Twitter has almost tripled from September to October.

When the social media channels are examined, the average session duration has grown from 1:28 to 7:35, meaning that visitors arriving to the Cancon webpages via social media stay there four times longer. The growth was biggest with visitors acquired by Facebook and Twitter. There was approx. five times more visitors from Facebook and two times more visitors from Twitter.

The second Cancon stakeholder forum was held in Brussels on 12 May 2015 and was hosted by the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies.

The first policy conference of Cancon was organised 13th May in Brussels, in Committee of the Regions premises. The conference created a lot of interest and the conference was fully booked.

Cancon had its second joint action meeting for all associated partners on 25 February 2015 in Brussels. The main focus of the meeting was preparing for the compilation of the first Interim report.

The first WP9 Coordination meeting was held on 5 November in Riga. It was hosted by professor Marcis Leja and the location was at the The Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (CDPC) which is supervised by the Ministry of Health of Latvia.

The communications team held its first meeting for its partners in Brussels, on 18 November. The meeting was well attended and gave a good perspective of activities. Cancon work packages presented their status of work.

The evaluation team needs to have e.g. full access to the documents. 

At the moment there are 52 organisations and 20 member states involved in Cancon.

An active network of European cancer control experts already exists according to the network analysis.

Cancon extranet is meant for the associated and collaborating partners of Cancon.

Cancon brochure is now ready in digital and printable format. 

The brochure describes Cancon and its objectives in a nutshell.

Leja hopes that Cancon will stimulate the decision makers to implement effective organised screening systems at national level.

The patient pathways for cancer patients shift more and more from the special health care to primary care.

According to Anttila, the biggest challenges of the cancer screening is the wide variation across EU.

Cooperation is needed for the dissemination and implementation of the outputs at the national level.
